mercury 25hp stuck in reverse

I have a mercury 25hp late 80s model and it is stuck in reverse. i can start it and run in reverse but wont go to nuetral or forward. does anybody know what could be wrong or have any suggestions?

is the shifter stuck or does it move freely? If it moves freely you might have a broken shifter cable. I had my shifter get stuck but the handle wouldn't move so I tore apart the shifter and found the cable had fallen out of my shift unit control houing as it was worn.

it moves freely in reverse but wont jump to neutral or forward but i can change speed in reverse.

sorry didn't get what you mean. Can the shifter itself move to forward or neutral?

no it stuck in reverse. You can move the handle to change speeds in reverse but it wont go out of reverse.

check your shifter it could have a bad shift lever control housing and now it is stuck cause the cam went too far and it came out. This is what happened to me I took the shifter apart and found the shift lever control housing was screwy. here is a pic of the part I am talking about, there should actually be points but as you can see the ones in the pictured that are circled are rounded off and that makes it so the face cam can go past where it is supposed to.
