G'day guys i replaced my water pump and when i was taking off my lower unit the 5" leg extension came off with it and at the same time a small plastic gear fell out into my hand from the extension and as iam doing this from a dingy (the motor is on a 36ft trimaran) i for the life of me cannot find where it fell from ,going by the diameter of the centre of the plastic gear its off of the gear shifter any ideas? i cannot find anything on line ,thanks for any help cheers Andy motor-2003 mercury 40 hp 4 stroke big foot with extension leg

Maybe the the wear sleave? The ring goes on first on top of the splines but you should see a rubber grommet as well, may have to get a flash light and take a peek. Put the metal ring on first and then put the rubber grommet on next. They can be tricky kind of like the old Force engines if you have had the pleasure. Meaning that you will probably have to readjust the ring and grommet every time you take a stab at it. See number number 21...

Sounds more like the coupler or guide bushing for the shift shaft since this motor uses the big "metric" lower unit.

Many thanks to your reply's guys i went to a Merc dealer here in Adelaide South Australia and they put me onto the problem it was as you mentioned faztbullet it was the coupler for the gear linkage i will be attempting to put it back together today my biggest problem is that the motor is on the back of a 36 ft trimaran and i am working out of a ten foot tinny ! makes for a fun time! thanks again to both of you for helping me out cheers Andy
