I could sure use some advice. 2000 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke big foot - The prop will not lock up in forward. It attempts to hold and then slips with a clicking noise. This began after hitting a stump. Since I've replaced the prop and had a local shop check it out. They replaced the (2) small springs and (1) larger spring for the forward gear ($450). But I still have the noise at low lideling rpm. At higher rpm I can't hear anything. But shouldn't the prop lock up tight in forward? It locks tight in reverse. I've checked the cables to the shifter control box and don't think thats my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

The prop will ratchet in fwd. gear it should lock when you turn it counterclockwise but will ratchet when turned clockwise thats normal but it should not click when going down the lake.

Re: Mercury 40hp Bigfoot Prop Slipping

Laddies - Thanks for the quick reponse. What you described is what I thought was correct. The prop will spin in forward gear clockwise however turning in counter clock wise it will not lock up. It hold lightly then slips making the clicking noise. In forward at an idal speed the sounds seems like it's not fully engaged in the forward gear. More rpms and the noise goes away. Any toughts on my next step?

Thanks again.

It sounds like someone that did the repair failed to adjust the shift cable, try to shorten the cable by moving the trunion about 3 to 4 turns or take it back and have the dealer finish their repair you paid them to do it once.
