Hi
I recently purchased a used speedboat on ebay.
It has a 50 hp engine i was told but who know's.
The plate with the serial no is painted so i can't find out the age.
Anyway after fixing the pull start(job and a half after welding etc to get spring working again) i run it up with rabbit ears to try and flush. Noticed no water coming out of any holes and im not sure of where they should be i can only see 2 tiny little holes.
There is two silve screw ,one says flush and one vent.On the other side there looks as if a small screw is missing other end of prop.Anyway after running it for about 5 mins i noticed the head was hot and steaming so i decided the water pump can't be working.Decided to drop the lower unit to have a look.By the two bolts on either side behind the bolts 2 holes that i think must have worn away with the use of spanners. Should i fix these ?? or will it not matter.I Noticed no oil in the bottom part as i think there should be? Right at the back closest to the transom is what i think is the water pump.Is it driven by the connecting rod above by the engine? I just want to know if im not barking up the wrong tree.
Ihave got a manual comming i just want some insite before i do anything else.
Thankyou from LONDON ENGLAND

Tony,
Welcome! The water pump impeller is mounted on the drive shaft just above your lower unit oil. You will need to completely drop the lower unit to get at it. You will also have to disconect the shift rod to be able to pull the lower unit off. Make sure that the unit is in neutral. Once the lower unit is off, you'll see the impeller housing which probably has four bolts. Once you remove those, you can get at the impeller. Good luck, and hopefully your manual will show up soon!!!

Also,
Before running the engine on the muffs (rabbit ears) make sure that you have lube in the lower unit, and that you have water out the tell tale hole within seconds!!! Steaming is bad!

Should be full of outboard lower unit oil. You can't really sub anything else. Not sure if you'd have the same products over there, but Quicksilver is the brand I use here.
The lower unit with the gears is seperate from the area with the water pump. You should be able to remove the lower unit to get at the pump without loosing any oil.
Good luck.

Let us know how it goes for you. All too often it seems people don't give an update and that is what the rest of us learn from.
