Last night was out fishing with my new boat.Motor is 2010 Mercury 50 4Stroke. 6th time out. Leaveing the launch we stalled out motor in mud/sand. Checked prop. everything ok. Continued out to fishing spot. Motor ran excellent.Reached top rpm and speed. Trim worked fine. Stopped and still fished for about and hour and decided to head home. When trying to get up to top speed I noticed that the power trim would trim down all the way but would only come up part way and then seem to stall out. When I slowed down to slower speed the trim worked fine. As soon as I tried to go fast it would do the same thing/trim up part way and than stop and almost seemed as though it was catching on something. Slow speed down and trim up would work fine. Motor was never able to reach top rpm and speed on the way back to launch. After getting boat home did a complete check of propeller and everything else seems ok. Anyone have any ideas.

Check the trim limit switch and/or the adjustable bracket that makes contact with the switch. You probably knocked something out of adjustment when you hit.

Re: Mercury 50 Power Trim Problem

there is a hydraulic bypass built into the ram that prevents it from lifting past certain point under power. If you load up the back end of a boat then sometimes it can seem like trim should lift higher.

maybe ... just maybe ... the trim was working perfect but the back of your boat was riding heavy in the water?

What is the S/N? So I can look at a schematic.

I could not tell from the parts blow-up but there has to be a trim limit adjustment that has gotten out of adjustment. How fast were you going when it got into the sand/mud?

Default Mercury 50 Trim Issue
I should have mentioned that the motor was taken in to Dealer after the 3rd outing as it would not rev more than 4200 RPM. They did a reset on the computer and on outing #4 & 5 it was like a new boat. 5200-5400 rpm. and planed beautiful.I talked to the experts at Mercury Marine just abit ago and they explained to me that there is a safety feature built in so that under full throttle it will only trim up to a certain point and then just bypass. They feel that it is an issue with the engine computer again and want the Dealer to run a full diagnostics check on the engine. It goes in tomorrow. I will let u know what they find.
Thanks Brian.
