Hi Folks!

I've acquired a 1957 Whirlwind with a 1950s Mercury 55e motor with remote controls.

But the remote controls are unlike the controls on my earlier OMCs. There's one large lever with a knob, and one much smaller lever that tucks into the control box.

The large lever appears to be some sort of combined shift/throttle lever. Is that correct?

And if so, what's the function of the smaller lever?

Thanks!
Dave

Absolutely...

The small lever is called a 'Warm up lever'. It's a fast idle, usually used when starting from cold so the revs can be held up to allow the engine to idle faster. There is an internal lock-out, so you can't use the big lever when the small lever is up.

Hope that helps ya....

Dave
a single lever it is both throttle and forward /reverse ,the smaller one that "tucks" in the case is a idle control .
some one may have details on it
this is the same type of control i have.

Best to start your own thread rather than 'hi-jack' someone else's ... (I have the complete manual on then... Ask away and I shall tell, but in your own thread)

Chris.

So, what's the starting drill? Choke only? Choke and lever? Lever only?

Thanks again!

Starting procedure... as outlined by the owners manual (Which has probably been lost a few years ago :D:D)

1. Squeeze fuel primer until it is firm. Don't over squeeze or it will flood the carb/s

2. Lift fast idle lever.

3. Turn key to ON.

4. While holding CHOKE button, turn key to START.

5. When engine starts, release CHOKE and lower fast idle lever to maintain a fast idle without revving the engine too hard.

6. If engine starts to quit, push CHOKE button momentarily.

7. When the engine is warm enough to run without the fast idle, lower the fast idle lever all the way down....

Also remember that these engine (all outboards) have dog clutches, not cones. There are either in gear or out of gear. NEVER 'ease' an outboard into gear, all you'll do is round off the dog clutches.

Job done..........
