We acquired a a project boat with this motor on it. The optic is good, a bit of aged crud on it to clean.
Problem is, we can't get it to fire.
We think part of the problem is a faulty kill switch (which has been taken out for now) and possibly a problem in the ignition switch

I have been trying to find identifying marks and number on the motor, but I was not quite sure where to look.
I found one set of numbers that lead me to believe it is a 94 model, a few paper stickers with bar code popped off (I saved them, have to scan them though)

But non of the numbers seem to translate into a serial number of the usable sort to find more information on the engine.

It does turn over, It does not fire.
The tank from the boat has been disconnected (last tag on the boat is from 2010, no telling what is in the onboard tank at this time) and replaced with a temporary tank and fuel line.

The heat seemed to have forced some fuel into the motor, when I cranked it it fired briefly, but since it wasn't a planned thing, I had the water disconnected, so I stopped, sadly I could not duplicate the brief success.

After this novel, the question is simple (I hope)
What do I need to clean (the plugs looked good I have been told. the wires look in good shape from the outside)

I have printed the instructions to 'Awakening a Sleeping Outboard' out from the forum for quick reference.

Pictures to follow

Hi DryDokCaptain,

I'd try the basics -
  • Get a spark tester and use it to verify the spark can jump the gap,
  • verify the plugs are the correct ones for your engine and are gapped accordingly - possibly buy new,
  • get a carb kit (probably gummed from sitting) to rebuild/clean, and
  • buy an impeller kit and change out the impeller.
  • Check lower unit oil - if white/milk/foam, research changing seals, if black/dark just do oil change.

what do I have to take off to get to the lower unit oil?

I am assuming this involves taking the beast off the boat?

Don't have to take it off the boat, but do need to be able to tilt it up so lower unit can slide off. After that, it is just time and a manual/guide that you need☺
