Re: Mercury 9.9M Starting Procedure
Starting procedure (from memory)

make sure you are not overpowered,
attach lanyard -in run pos.
attach and prime fuel line
rotate idle speed (choke knob) to faster and pull choke knob
pull starter rope.
when started let engine warm up then push choke in, if it dies try to start again with choke pushed in. if it won't pull out again this shoots fuel into the carb each time.

if it won't start in a few pulls, repeat procedure.

Merc 9.9 Features (from recollection)

unlike your omc's when you pull the choke knob it shoots fuel into the carb. this can flood the engine if you work it too much when starting. this knob also adjusts idle speed. will also get motor to idle down when trolling.

i really like the shifting in the throttle arm...the newer ones have an adjustment for the friction to help the throttle setting hold while underway it can get annoying on the older ones because the fricton was hard to adjust and hold.

co-pilot adjustment there should be a red lever just under the front cowl, this is to make the steering tighter or looser.

no pins for trim/tilt/shallow water. it ratchets internally. there is a lock knob that if engaged will not allow you to return unit to down position. you want it unlocked unless you are trying to keep the motor tilted up on a trailer or something. you can only trim or tilt the motor IN GEAR (i think)

make sure you follow the preventive maint schedule and winterize properly should give you decades of service.
