I was just given a 2000 9.9M and have never owned a Mercury before. I've ordered manuals, but would appreciate someone giving me the starting procedure for this motor. What's new to me [always owned OMC's] is the gear shift built into the twist throttle and the idle lever settings. Anything else I should know about this motor will be greatly appreciated. You'll get a laugh out of me looking all over for the gear shift lever before I realized it was in the throttle.

Update: OK, got it started and it ran good in tank. Wouldn't shut off when I flipped RUN/OFF switch [with lanyard attached] to OFF. Had to run it out of gas to stop. Am I missing something or is switch defective?

It should have stopped it. Trace the wiring back and see if it is still connecteted at the bullet connectors. I may be wrong but there may also be a stop in the end of the tiller arm. Press the very end and see if that works.
Great little engine.!!

Re: Mercury 9.9M Starting Procedure

Thanks, AndyL. The bullet connectors were disconnected under the cowl. I don't know why and can't ask the previous owner because he's out of the country. I hooked them back up and everything worked fine. There's also a stop button on the end of the tiller arm, as you said. It works now, too. Many thanks.

Starting procedure (from memory)

make sure you are not overpowered,
attach lanyard -in run pos.
attach and prime fuel line
rotate idle speed (choke knob) to faster and pull choke knob
pull starter rope.
when started let engine warm up then push choke in, if it dies try to start again with choke pushed in. if it won't pull out again this shoots fuel into the carb each time.

if it won't start in a few pulls, repeat procedure.

Merc 9.9 Features (from recollection)

unlike your omc's when you pull the choke knob it shoots fuel into the carb. this can flood the engine if you work it too much when starting. this knob also adjusts idle speed. will also get motor to idle down when trolling.

i really like the shifting in the throttle arm...the newer ones have an adjustment for the friction to help the throttle setting hold while underway it can get annoying on the older ones because the fricton was hard to adjust and hold.

co-pilot adjustment there should be a red lever just under the front cowl, this is to make the steering tighter or looser.

no pins for trim/tilt/shallow water. it ratchets internally. there is a lock knob that if engaged will not allow you to return unit to down position. you want it unlocked unless you are trying to keep the motor tilted up on a trailer or something. you can only trim or tilt the motor IN GEAR (i think)

make sure you follow the preventive maint schedule and winterize properly should give you decades of service.
