Hopefully, this thread will help pickup where Mercury fell in their oversight of not including a Carburetor removal procedure in a Mercury factory service manual that I paid for a mere 79$.
This is a 2001 40HP Mercury Nitro 2 Stroke engine. Keep in mind that I am a total novice, and I am using a factory manual to perform this procedure. I can turn a wrench, as long I have good directions. Mercury, however, has thrown me a proverbial curveball by not including a detailed carburetor removal procedure for this engine even though the ?factory manual? refers to sections that do not exist. As in the Carburetor Float Adjustment section, which refers to an "outline for the Carburetor Removal" that is nowhere to be found in the entire book. 8O
I?m no English teacher, but I don?t understand the ?-following.? part.
When I contacted Mercury Publications Dept about this, they had no answer for me why this section was missing. Figuring that a 79$ manual is supposed to have this procedure and having found that it didn?t was pretty disappointing. In the end the publication department faxed me a procedure for a 3 cylinder engine, which helped to a minimal degree, but c?mon, I just paid 79$!
The mercury manual I have is the for the 30/40 2 Cylinder starting at year 1994.
So, since I?m a novice I went through some practice moves removing the carb. I stopped at a point, given it was nearing sundown, and that I had no intention getting too deep until I checked things out, and asked all of my stupid questions on here first J.
The first thing I had to do was remove the oil tank (oil injected) to get to the carburetor cover.
Then remove the carb cover exposing the internal parts.
I labeled as much as I could for my own reference. Please comment on anything I have mislabeled.
From the directions that were faxed to me I am instructed to remove the throttle cam from the stud,
and then remove the fuel inlet/outlet hoses, which brings me to my first question of this discussion. The hoses are fastened by zip ties. I guess I cut them and pull the hoses off right? Is there a way to stop any fuel spill? Any advice here will be useful.
Also, the throttle cam form stud removal looks pretty complicated. According to the FAXed directions that?s all I disconnect to remove the entire assembly, but when I look around the carb I see a couple of other links like the oil lever. Obviously, I have to remove them, but I?m scared without any direction of this part. Advice? Help? Thanks for contributing. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
