Mercury dies when hitting throttle hard

Have a 1978 800 merc when I hit throttle hard engine will die if I feather the throttle it works fine any ideas would be a huge help. Also the exhaust is really loud the guy I bought it from said it had stinger exhaust any ideas on this and how to fix it and make it quiet like everyone elses.

If you richen the idle mixture slightly, (1/8 turn CCW) top carb first, it may improve the hard throttle issue you have.

I am not sure what a "Stinger" Exhaust is. It sound like you may have an exhaust leak, or some modifications may have been done. Some performance folks used to drill holes in the mid-section to let the exhaust out.
