I have a 2006 Merc EFI 2 stroke that seems to be running too cold causing it to run rich and foul plugs.

The sea water temp is 58 degrees

Engine Idles up to 147 degrees quickly..so thermostats are working and I have also checked them in a pot.

Engine Drops to 81 degrees once over 1000 rpm. Will stay on 81 even at WOT. If I drop the RPM back to 3500 rpm a plug will foul.

Im thinking of either putting a restrictor in the hose from the block to the poppet or a heavier spring in the poppet valve.

What do you guys think.

cheers,

Jake.

You have a poppet valve problem, either the seal has fell out of block, diaphram is busted or spring has been saltwater damaged and lost tension.

Thanks Faztbullet, I pulled the poppet out and it all looked ok, the grommet is still in the block and the poppet seats nicely against it.

I made up a 5mm washer to place between the poppet and the spring to increase the pressure.

I checked the pressure while pushing down on digital scales and the standard spring allowed the poppet to open at 3 pounds. With the washer in place it now takes 5 pounds of pressure to open it.

Do you think this is a good way to increase temperatures or should I try a restrictor in the hose from the block to the poppet.

I would like to get the temperatures to at least 110 degrees at 3500rpm.

cheers,

Jake.
