The kill switch hooked up?(had to ask)
If it's not on right it won't work.
You do a spark test with a spark tester?
Anyone do any recent repairs?

outboardignition.com has test procedures for your motor.
You have the Prestolite system.

Ok I'm not sure how the kill switch works.. looks like maybe it was type that attaches to you and if pulled it kills.... it's there I even tried pushing in while starting.. I just grounded a plug and looked for spark.. as far as recent repairs.. I just got it and I don't know for sure.. but I don't think.. way i took it it's set for a year

Look up outboardboardignition and do the tests for your motor.

Need to know which ignition system you have.

Do you have 5 Sky Blue coils and 3 Sky Blue CD Modules ( this is the Prestolite ignition system).

Do you have 5 Dark Blue almost Black coils with a Switch Box (this is the Mercury Thunder Bolt ignition system).

OK so you have the Prestolite ignition system. Each of the 3 CD Modules has a white wire coming out of it. That is the Kill Circuit.

To stop the engine, when you turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, the three white wires are shorted to ground. All three white wires go to the terminal strip on the left side of the motor looking forward. Disconnect those three White wires and this will disable the ignition Kill circuit. Check for spark at each plug. If you get spark, then you either have a bad Kill Switch which is usually located on the dash or Throttle control handle, might have a switch that says "RUN"/"OFF", or a problem in the wiring harness, or someone has wired the ignition switch wrong.

NOTE: If the motor starts with the Kill circuit disabled, you will not be able to shut the motor off with the ignition switch. To stop the motor, either engage the choke or take your hand and cover the carburetor throttle openings to flood the motor and it will stop.

Yes you can tie all three wires together and if it starts (hopefully), just hold the wires to ground and it will kill the spark.

One thing I forgot to mention. Before you get too deep into the motor ignition issues, perform a compression test. This will tell you if the rings and cylinder walls are in good shape. If you have low or no compression, you need to decide if you want to spend the time and money into possibly having to replacing a head gasket, or maybe piston(s), or worse case scenario.....a possible motor re-build. Just something to think about.
