Laddies got you on the manual. The wire goes to the stud on the side of the magneto. It grounds the mag to shut off the motor and floats, no ground to allow the motor to start/run. That's why I asked earlier if the controls were hooked up and if the key was on.

If the magneto is still off the motor, you can test it simply. Put a finger on the copper strip with the plastic knurled knob and spin the shaft. If you get shocked the magneto is working. It isn't a severe shock, just a tingle. That doesn't eliminate the rotor and cap, also the points can still be out of adjustment. How is the carbon button in the cap? I had problems with mine a little while back that Laddies helped me with..

Hello, I am still trying to work out what the problem is. I have cleaned everything and tested it but still no spark. I think I will have to test the coil again.

Good morning so my brother has the same distributor and mag and he is getting no spark however there is a black wire with yellow strip that goes from key to side of mag . he thought that it need to have power so he did and it was clicking. Now it does nothing. The question is what kind of damage did he do to this mag by doing that. I see the parts are really expensive so I don’t want to take it apart unless I know there is a reason. The wire bolted to mag in pic is the one he put power to.

From what I see the wire is a ground to kill the engine. So what would have he burned out by putting power. Is whole mag junk?

That magneto does not need 12 volts at all.------So remove the bottom part of the magneto.----Those 4 bolts ( 3/8" wrench ) and inspect.--Remove cap and rotor carefully.------Usually cleaning breaker points and setting at 0.008 / 0.010" does the trick.----Test for spark before installing it on the motor

Ok so by him putting power to the post did he do damage to the magneto then
