Laddies got you on the manual. The wire goes to the stud on the side of the magneto. It grounds the mag to shut off the motor and floats, no ground to allow the motor to start/run. That's why I asked earlier if the controls were hooked up and if the key was on.
If the magneto is still off the motor, you can test it simply. Put a finger on the copper strip with the plastic knurled knob and spin the shaft. If you get shocked the magneto is working. It isn't a severe shock, just a tingle. That doesn't eliminate the rotor and cap, also the points can still be out of adjustment. How is the carbon button in the cap?
