Im sure relabilty is more 50%50 luck and mantience. My cousin has a 80hp Merc 800 and has literally done nothing to it since 99. Runs the boat wide open throttle everytime and the boat is always turn key no starting issues. Also known people who have had mercs and issues since day 1 from dealer. Sure the same can be said about evinrude as well. And unless your comparing the same technology / yr engine, same hp, same boat, same driver different brand engine any speed / gas mileage / planing issues can be attributed to other things besides the engine.

Always hear people bragging about how Mercury makes the best outboards.

Is this true?

I have an Evinrude and would like to believe Evinrude is better.

Sure they do, but now they call them Honda !...or Honda Marine.

c'mon now, gettin somewhere far away fast can be done by a merc, but the long wait for the coastguard to come and tow you back makes it even out.....kinda like you never got there at all!

Funny! But really the performance boat market almost as a whole will not use Envirudes, why because the want to not only go fast, but they want the reliability of a Mercury. There's no reason for this but experience or they would have stopped a long time ago.
