After not being run for 6 years I dusted off my 1957 Mercury Mark 30H over the weekend. A quick check revealed no spark at all, so I set about digging into the Kiekhaefer magneto. Top bearing was a bit crusty in the mag so I made a trip to Kaman Bearing (great resource for old Merc enthusiasts!) and picked up a set of bearings (Top, SKF 6003; bottom SKF 6002, same in all the Kiekhaefer mags if you need them - ran me about $15.00 for the pair). I put them in last night and a quick spin of the rotor gave a big fat spark against my bench vice. Further reassembly showed the spark continuing on to the plugs, so now issue #1 is taken care of.
The Mark 30H has a Quicksilver direct drive lower unit at a 1:1 ratio with the waterpump on the propshaft. I decided to check the impeller, which revealed a loose bearing. Fortunately, it didn't take the shaft with it - these things are getting hard and pricey to find... Hope to get the unit back together this evening with new bearings and seals. Then it'll be ready for the Antique Raceboat Regatta in Clayton, NY this weekend!
Pic is from 2002 event, last time I ran this motor...
