I have recently acquired an old Mercury outboard and have determined it to be a Mark 35AS Serial No. 1219237. It is in poor/fair condition. I am wondering if it is worth trying to retore. Can anyone give me any additional info on this motor, its possible value, and where I may get parts for it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mercury Mark 35AS

How are you assessing the motor as "poor/fair"? Does the motor turn over with good compression? Is it complete? Is anything obviously broken? Does it have controls with it? All of these things factor into whether or not you are willing to fix it up.

Lots of parts available for these motors - very similar to other 4-cylinder Mercs of the same era (1959). I recently bought a complete powerhead off eBay for $25.00 - shipping cost me more than the purchase price! Many new parts available through dealers, NAPA and www.oldmercs.com. They're good running motors, very smooth, solid performers. If you've got a need for a project, enjoy tinkering and like the thought of having a vintage motor, then go for it. If you want ease of maintenance, turn-key operation and take-it-to-the-dealer serviceability, get something else...

- Scott

Re: Mercury Mark 35AS

Hi Scott. Thanks for the reply. The reason I using the term poor/fair condition is that this motor has been sitting for years. All the electrical wiring has decayed to nothing, the twin carbs are in bad condition, and who knows what the lower unit is like at this point. I had already found the website for oldmercs.com as you suggested and learned that parts for this ole boy is rare and expensive. This is my first project, so guess I didn't realize what I have gotten myself into. Thanks for the info and hope you don't mind if maybe I call on you again sometime for some further advise as I start on this project.

Wayne
