Mercury Motor Problems

I had my 2 cycle motor serviced and they put a new seal and impeller in it and it still leaks gear oil in the propeller. I also had a new hose for the gas tanks and for some reason after a while the ball goes empty and my motor kills on me alot. Any suggestions about what I can do to solve these issues?

Welcome to iboats!

I would take it back and make them fix it.

Re: Mercury Motor Problems

The impeller and impeller seals are separate from the prop shaft seals, so replacing one doesn't affect the other. If you were talking about the prop shaft seals, if they were indeed replaced, I'd ask the servicing shop if the shaft was scored.

Just a note; residual 2 stroke oil that collects in the midsection and lower unit can sometimes be mistaken as a leaking prop shaft seal as it drips out the "thru the hub" exhaust.

If the service people replaced the hose and the problem with the primer bulb started then, take it back and have them find out what's wrong. If your replaced it yourself, check to make sure the arrows on the primer bulb are facing toward the engine (in direction you want fuel to flow). You might also want to check all connections for an air leak.

Let us know what you find out.

If it's gearlube, it should look about like what's in the gearcase. If it's different, it's residual oil dripping down the exhaust. That happens mostly to motors that idle alot. Or it could be from a carb leak or from you leavng the fuel tank connected with the vent closed.

I took it back and had them look it over and said it was good but when I tried it on the lake it still kills on me and I see oil on the propeller as I pull my boat up. The arrows are pointing toward the engine on the hose. It says they put a new seal kit on it on my bill. Also they said my motor didnt have a thermostat and they put that on my motor. What does a thermostat do? What kind of 2 stroke oil is residual?

The unburned oil from your cylinders is leaving by way of the exhaust which is between the prop body and the prop hub. did the dealer test run it after he was done repaing it? make sure your fuel line connects are tight and not sucking a little air. How is your Spark? and compression?
