Mercury motor

I have a 4.5 mercury motor 2 stroke that has been setting around for a long time. It's an 80's model. I can't get it to start. It's getting fuel, but I do not think it's getting any spark. How does one check for spark? If this is the problem, were do I begin to check what might be wrong and get it fixed.
