Wondering if anyone would have info on the use of Opti-oil for my twin 150 optis. I own and operate a sports fishing charter operation(salmon/halibut) out of the west coast of Canada and I go through a lot of Mercury Optimax oil, which seems to be priced quite high. I've been told by some buddies that I am crazy to be purchasing this, as Mercury doesn't make the oil, they buy it and put their labels on it. I've also been told by my local Merc rep that it is in the best interest of my engines to purchase Opti-oil, which is what I would expect him to say. I usually go through two 45 gallon barrels a season.

Welcome to the forum. I have heard they require/work best with the Opti oil. Someone on here with more knowledge will chime in.

Contact bulk oil distrubitor and see what they have and prices. Down on this side of the border it is no problem buying for them at wholsale prices when you are talking by the barrell.

Real-Deal, You need to consult your owners manual. It will specify whether you may use other kinds of oil than Optimax. My neighbor has a 2006 150 optimax. He put regular TC-W3 oil in it (ignorance on his son-in-law's part), and it ran crappy. if I remember correctly, even though the owners manual said this was OK, we sucked out the oil and refilled with Optimax.

Get a wholesale account with your local marine supply house and get the oil for a lot less. If you have a westmarine nearby they call it a "port supply" account.

I also have a 2006 Optimax 150. I have been running the Pennzoil Synthetic (at Walmart) since she was new. Runs GREAT. The owners manual clearly states that any oil meeting the tcw3 rating should/can be used. Shoot, even the WALMART brand of oil meets the rating.

I regularly run 25 miles offshore, and if I thought for a minute that I had to worry about the oil I was using, I would not leave the ramp.
