The only thing i have done that i think might have caused this was i added 10oz of Startron to 30 gallons of gas.

Also Linked a video if you watch you can see it smoking.

Water is also coming out the little exaust hole with the smoke below the pee hole.

Re: Mercury Optimax Smoking

so could the white smoke just be steam? the water was 45 degrees today.
since it goes from light to heavy i seams that would be when the thermostat opens and closes right?

the optimax makes me nervous i just got it last fall and didnt have much time to use it till this spring. i just changed the spark plugs tonight the old one must have been 5 years old 2 were real black.
going from a 1986 200 mariner to a optimax is a little intimidating. i did all the work on my mariner no problems optimax is scary lol.

You seem a little over concerned...why dont you take your motor in to the local Merc dealer and let them give it a good maintenance, then you can put your mind to ease, it probably needs it anyway.

Re: Mercury Optimax Smoking

I echo Sparkie's thoughts. When I upgraded from a Force 120 to an Optimax 150, I felt a little overwhelmed by the sheer power and intricacies of the new(er) motor. The first thing I did was get it checked over by a licensed mechanic. Cost me $150, but it was money very well spent.

That was two years ago, and now I'm heading in to my third (trouble free) season. When it came time to winterize it at the end of the season, I again took it to my mechanic and had him do what needed to be done. This cost $450ish, but I've been able to sleep the past 4 months knowing that my baby is sleeping soundly and will be ready to go come the spring.

Get to know your mechanic and don't be afraid to spend a few bucks. It's money well spent, because you know for damn sure your engine is going to conk out just when you least expect it.
