Your correct about the serial number being a 1978. Is there a number stamped on the head ? As Chris noted the wiring harness connection location is not what they used in 78... Bracket swapped out with serial # plate left on is a possibility. There is a chance that the head was swapped and they changed the lower pan sans hole for connector as well.Looking at the picture to me indicates that it has not been swapped. My reasoning is the wiring looks stock and if they went to the trouble of changing the head they would of addressed some of the wiring that is in need of some replacing/splicing and connections all cleaned and coated with anti/corrosion material.

So now I'm a bit confused, the serial number on the bracket would indicate that the bracket and probably tilt is a '78? The stamp on the block with numbers 5777... probably indicate it is a '81 head and lower unit? Somebody wrote 86 on the side of the head. 1120120732.jpg1120120735a.jpg1120120735b.jpg

Agreed, Looks to have Power Trim from a '78 or so. Late 1979 was the start of the ADI Ignition IL6 motors. According to Maxrules, that serial number puts the motor at 1980 or 1981.

Thanks Chris, Mr. 88 and all that helped out. I would have been lost without you guys, not to mention ordering the wrong year parts for the motor.
