Re: Mercury tower of power 1115 starter will not crank 1978 I6
Your correct about the serial number being a 1978. Is there a number stamped on the head ? As Chris noted the wiring harness connection location is not what they used in 78... Bracket swapped out with serial # plate left on is a possibility. There is a chance that the head was swapped and they changed the lower pan sans hole for connector as well.Looking at the picture to me indicates that it has not been swapped. My reasoning is the wiring looks stock and if they went to the trouble of changing the head they would of addressed some of the wiring that is in need of some replacing/splicing and connections all cleaned and coated with anti/corrosion material.
