I have a Mercury rpm gauge and I am wondering if it will work for my Evinrude 70 hp outboard motor? Replies appreciated!

A Tach just reads pulses and makes no difference what motor, so long as the correct pulses/poles can be selected

Well, it is not always that simple. Tachs made in the last 15 years or so work for both Merc and Evinrude/Johnson. They are connected the same for either.

Older ones had a special connection for evinrude/johnson outboards.

Tachs older than that were made specifically for one brand or the other, and do not work for both.

so it depends on what tach you have.

It's a 1988 Evinrude and an the tech came off of a 2004 Mercury. Does that help figure it out Chris?

I would expect that tach to work for either. You would need the Tach setting for your Evinrude. The OEM web site should tell you that info.

Thank you, I will check it out. I do not care if it's accurate, the problem is the motor is so quiet at idle I can't tell if it's running sometimes. Any reading will do, thank you

Well back in the 1950 era plus and minus, OMC prided itself on "quiet" operation while their Mercury counterparts were blasting by them making all sorts of racket.....I was an OMC guy back then, getting passed by green and grey Mercs, but years later recovered my sanity. My current Mercury is very quiet. Grin

if you cannot hear a 2 cycle 1988 OB run, I suspect you need a hearing aid. They are not quiet like 4 cycle motors, even at idle.

SO That had nothing to do with Carl Kiekhaefer being a pathological liar about his hp ratings?

Not hard to meet spec when you lie about the ratings
