2 part question.
Anyone have one?
I am getting ready to replace a 20 year old garage that is for the most part, getting ready to come apart.
I was thinking one of the metal garages in the 18x31 foot range with a 10x8 garage door and an entrance door.
Pros and cons please.
Also, can I use the same breaker box I have now, it's a new style, in the metal garage or does it take a different type?
I have my electric underground from the house breaker box.
Should I set a pole and get it's own service?

Re: Metal Garage

When I built mine I went with a 30x30 metal building with insulation. It was cheaper than having a wood one built. The two mistakes I made: 1. 7' garage doors. Boat just barely clears and no way the van will. 2. I should have made it 30x40. Bigger is always better. :)

As far as electric, mine has a standard Square D 200 amp panel and breakers. The shop pulls power off of the meter on the house, but is not connected to my house panel. There is a separate disconnect on the house by the meter sort of like one for the outside A/C unit, but bigger. Cables run underground over to the shop.

Mine was from a kit company out of Pennsylvania. Can't remember their name, but can look it up later if that would help.

Re: Metal Garage

I remember this site when I was searching for prices. www.lesterbuildings.com I couldn't help but remember the site by its name :D

The way Jerico said on the electric is the way I would go. I have my shop set up like that as well. Lots of places out there at different prices. My bud that I helped put one up, has about 12K in his. 32' X 64'. Uninsulated and no floor yet either. I recommend also a tall door. Amish usually can get pole barns up quickly and are reasonable on labor. Good Luck Lester

Re: Metal Garage

I knew it started with an L! Thanks SS, Lester is where my shop came from and had a local company set it up. If you would like more details PM me. Can't see it very well, but it is the building on the right.
