Re: Mew,Mew

That was my thought but I wanted to hear it from someone else ...is that a big job...can I handle it ? I did replace all the bellows, bearing and shift cable myself last season....and it all works..lol...but that was a lot for me to handle ...what a crappy job ...thanks....any other opinions or thoughts out there...Bob:facepalm:

Re: Mew,Mew

The water pump is no big deal to replace. 4 pulley bolts and 4 on the pump itself plus a hose clamp. Loosen the pulley bolts BEFORE loosening up the drive belt. Should take you less than an hour, including frosty refreshment breaks. :)

Pump runs about $60

OK ..I am now at home ,start the motor and this gawd awful shreik comes from the engine as it starts...it lasts for about 4 seconds and leaves...my belts slipping for sure....after about a minute or two at idle I hear the mew ...if I listen from one side it comes from the alternator ..if I listen from the other side it seems to come from the p.s. reservoir ...my neighbor hears the same thing...I put a long screw driver to my ear and touch various areas and I seem to hear it better when it touches the housing behind the center pulley ..what the heck is going on....bewildered Bob

Ayuh,.... Tighten the belt 1st,....

Then rub a bar of Lava handsoap against the Inside, wear surface of the belt, as the motor is idlin'....

Just be Careful, 'n keep yer extremities outa the belt...

Take the belts off. A mechanic that never changed a pump? I will think about that one.

Re: Mew,Mew

Can you try this.....?

Running the engine, put all of the electrical load on it that you can, lights, blowers, radio, and see if rate or pitch of the "mew" changes....if it does, then I would guess it is in the electrical system. Then, if you can, change out the battery as a test, ie grab one from your vehicle or somewhere and see if something changes. And since battery is out, have it checked, electrolyte check and load test (if you can get at electrolyte)

Battery could be "going south" (I like that saying) or alternator regulator could be doing the same or just working at a pitch that you notice and might not be anything to be concerned about at all.

Please report back. I still think it is part of the cycling of the volt regulator in the charging circuit. Guessing......

Thanks guys ...a couple of great ideas ...this wknd I will run the motor with the belts off for a few minutes to see if the mew appears ...if it does,it has to be the circ pump...if it doesnt I will hook the belts back on and try the electrical load and see what happens...I will update after the test...regards,Bob:)

When you remove the belt(s) turn the various pulleys by hand and see if any feel loose or rough. And since the circulating pump is driven by the belt - your statement above is exactly opposite. ;) If you still have the sound with no belts, then it has to be something not driven by the belt.

Re: Mew,Mew

UPDATE....I removed and replaced the belts ....what a stupid job that is..had to jack the engine up on one side after removing the spacer block to get the belts on and off the center pulley....aagh!!...anyway started the engine and no squawks and no noise ...hurray ...until it got to operating temperature and ..THERE IT IS...now cause the belts are quieter and the idle is @ 650 rpm ,it is even more easily heard ...it really sounds more like a squawk but at the same pitch that a kitten would mew...when the engine cover is down it comes thru as a mew...anyway ,my arm is scarred from the belt install ,I hate working upside down and I am pissed it wasn't the belts ( although they probably needed changing)..anyone else have any ideas...oh I did turn the ps pump and alternator pulleys and they were smooth turning...tried all electrical stuff on and it did not affect the timing or volume of the noise.....thanks,Bob:confused:

Re: Mew,Mew

Try disconnecting the wiring off the alternator, leaving the belt connected and see what happens. When the regulator "pulses" the alternator to charge, that may be where the noise is coming from, alternator charging in pulses as commanded and making a noise. May be time for an alternator if the noise stops when the wiring is disconnected.

Re: Mew,Mew

I did as you requested ...started motor ...noise startedsfter 3 minutes or so as it warmed up...shut off the motor..disconnected orange wire and smaller wires from alternator ..started motor and noise appeared immediately...so not coming from alternator...is there anything from the pulley area or thermostat that could cause the noise ..thermostat is new with about 20 hours on it...thanks Bob
