IMHO the OMC 6 hp outboard motor, (any year) was the best marine engine that was ever built ...

I have an early 80s Rude and it is a fabulous engine and I would not hesitate to get another one, that was the very end of when they still built them right, after that they started adding plastic peices and overall quality really bombed.

They are simple a stone and as reliable and you cna still get almost any part you need for it.

Of coarse you can run anything into the ground so check it out well, it you can't hear it run at least do a compession check and check the lower oil, compression should be around 100 and both cylinders within 10% and crack the bottom drain plug until oil comes out, it should be nice honey color, darker is okay and milky oil indicates a leaky seal, any amount of actual water is bad and consider walking if you find that.

I would agree that that series is one of the two best outboards ever made. IMO the only one better is the 3-4.5HP series.

Like any piece of machinery, it needs care. Good learning experience for the boy. He can pass it on to his grandson if he treats her right.

I agree with you JB, I once owned a 4 hp that had an angled lower unit and except for having the trottle control as a separate lever on the side of the motor instead of on the tiller ... it was perfection for fishing and would last forever. As they called the 6 hp the "Fisherman" I do not remember the special nickname of the 4 hp.

Cheers and best wishes for 2012

The three was usually called the "Lightwin", but special versions had other names.

My Lightwin weighed 28lb.

went to look at the motor, not in bad shape........but it has no serial # tag. i dont feel that the motor is "hot", but still am a bit leary. is there any way to find out the year and hp without the tag? looked all over the block but cant find anything. also noticed that it might need the lower unit resealed, its the one piece type,....is that an expensive/difficult job to diy?

Pull the hood and there should be a quarter size plug called a welch plug that has the serial and model number on top of the engine somewhere.

People take the transom tag off all the time, doesn't mean it is stolen.

On Chrysler motors the tag is glued on and it can fall off from glue drying with time and heat. On OMC the tag is rivetted on solid ... you be the judge. Owner providing an invoice with his name and adress on it + picture of the motor would convince me it's not hot.
