Always identify the enemy. The Arab Muslim world has id Isreal and their supporters, mainly the US, exactly who is our enemy in this deal in Iraq.

Besides who cares about evil and social injustice; who cares about the bleeding heart, we just need a friend.

Under the circumstances I made the remark, I can stand the heat. I guess I never got back to the thread.

Re: Military Strategy

PW2, KMA

You are correct though. My point on the other threads was that the reason we went there was that Saddam was considered a threat (and he was), you can't rewind the video tape. Now we are there, and we continue to expose and eradicate evildoers. I am sorry if that makes you feel uneasy. It makes me feel proud.

I personally don't think that Evil is a trite cutesy word that brands me as an idiot, but apparently you do. To me it is the definition of what we should all be united to fight everyday, everywhere: violent crime, murderers, slave trade, child abuse, sexual abuse, organised crime, real-live Dr. Evils (like Saddam, OBL, Kim Jong-il; a couple of real-dead ones: Stalin, Hitler). You know the list, so again why ridicule the use of that word? Oh, I know, you don't have the time to address it more thougthfully, you are busy worrying about the larger threat of Global Warming

To me the reason that you are uncomfortable with that word is that you are unable or unwilling to make moral judgements about people and their actions. For me that brands you as immature, childish and a hook-line-and-sinker sucker for the "whatever floats your boat" mentality of the left. Ya know, "who am I to judge?". It is our responsibility to judge! That's is what you SHOULD be doing with your ability to reason. Not blathering on about how your ability to reason gives you the intellect to realise that judgements are what cause conflict. Blllllleeeeeccccchhhh!!! Oh wait, there I go judging again.

I have been clear and I have been honest about my understanding of some huge global issues and you choose to ridicule. Beeeeaaaauuuutiful. Precisely why your ilk is reviled by those of us who insist that there is a distinction between right and wrong. There I go, cute and trite again.

The interesting thing is that I complimented you when I was trying to engage in discussion . . . hmmmmmmmmm, I guess I am an idiot!

Rant off.

Re: Military Strategy

Man, you got off on a good one there!

Hey, I am against Evil, just like the next guy. I would love to eradicate evil. Hey, maybe world peace is at hand.

I'm assuming you're the one that gets to decide what is, or is not, Evil. If that decision was left in someone else's hands, we may get an entirely different version of what evil is

The title of this thread, however, is military strategy, and when you enter a conflict with something as nebulous as "Evil" at best you end up with some sort of Don Quixote like quest--it may well make you feel better, but it actually achieves little or nothing. At worst, you get people that identify as evil something entirely different than you, and you may well become the evil they fight.

I am not saying that evil does not exist--of course it does--all of human history is replete with examples of it. However, when plotting a military action, you need a military objective, and it must be identifiable and achieveable.

If you can't do that, then the military is the wrong tool to use.

Re: Military Strategy

PW,

I reacted as I did because you were obviously referring to me. I will repeat: I believe you to be a bright, decent, honorable man and worthy of good debate, so why do you choose to be sarcastic?

Frankly, you'll find this as equally trite and before I say so I will remind you that I am not a churchgoer. I have reached this conclusion based on logic. The "bibles" of all major religions define "evil" and that is good enough for me. Whether by fantasy or reality they remove that definition from contemporary Man. Which is why I have also posted that there is no definition of right and wrong without religion. If there was not that reference point (bibles) then I would agree with you that "evil" then becomes simply each individual's personal definition. Which is precisely your fear, I think. See the paradox?

I noted the original Military objective in the other thread(s). It changed. As I said, no rewind button, we must deal with what we have been dealt.

Re: Military Strategy

Darn, I missed something here. Maybe someone can tell me how I can tell who is evil and who is not.
Evil is way to far out there on the vs what scale for me to put any significance to its meaning.

We kill Palestine Paul:

To his son we are evil, to Israel that he intends to attack we are good. Get the point there.

No. That is why there must be a source of the definition of evil. I provided one. You chose to ignore it

Re: Military Strategy

QC, Read your post again and all I see is some examples of evil people, some name calling about intellect and no definition so that I will know where to attack or how to defend myself against your evil.

If I bomb a village full of evil people and innocent people are killed, does that make me evil?

If I invade a country because I fear them and my independence, does that make me evil?

If I do not believe in democracy, does that make me evil?

If I have a nuclear weapon, does that make me evil?

If I kill people that are evil, does that make me evil.

If I follow different religious beliefs, does that make me evil?

I reread your post QC and am still not clear can you address these questions in a civil manner?

Re: Military Strategy

Oh tex, now you are being stubborn here. You know as well as the next guy that evil people have tails and horns and they sold their soul to the devil and as a reward they got to carry those three pointed pitch forks.Evil people are little devil apprentices, you know that.
If you want to make an atom bomb, you are evil.If you made one fifty years ago you are good.
If you want chemical warfare delivery systems, you are evil.If you have huge stockpiles of this stuff + delivery systems, you are good.
Come to think of it tex,I'm getting all mixed up.
Better stop here.
