Thanks a Bunch! Ordered the Upper Unit Seal kit.

Does anyone know if Any slide hammer will work or do I need the Mercruiser specific slide hammer puller?

No. A regular slide hammer will work, or not. Sometimes they don't work if they're really frozen.
If you look in the Adult Sticky at the top there's a section that shows some home made tools as well.

why do you need a slide hammer?

From What I can tell, There are 2 sets of seals in the upper. Reading it over briefly, it looks like I will have to take the bearings out to get to the second set of seals. AM I incorrect?

Good question. I thought he was trying to remove his gimbal bearing.

Step 11 on Page 16 Looks like I need to use a slide hammer to remove a bearing in order to get to 2 of the oil seals in the upper unit. I assume if the upper is leaking air, I would need to reseal these. as well as the other oil seals.

I bought a upper reseal kit and it should be here by Friday

No slide hammer required. What you are looking at is them showing you how to remove the bearing race not the seal..

Okay, So the upper is disassembled. Reading the service manual I think I know where my water source is. I installed the sea impeller last year without using sealant anywhere (n00b to boating). I'm waiting on some loctite and gasket maker to reassemble.

Some Questions if I may:

I have a "48" etched on the driven gear. What does this mean?

Should I get new gaskets for the water pump?

Also, One of the 4 bolts for that top cover snapped, any idea where I can get a replacement?

What Type of Paint should I use to paint the outdrive? Is there anything I should do to prep it?

Thanks again for all the help thus far.
