Min. steering radius

I have a '73 40hp super seahorse that i put on a 17' trhull . the boats sidewalls are too short to accomodate the total travel of the steering arm . the pic is of the bracket i'm using and not the same boat . i'm getting about 80% out of it . is this ok ?

Looks like it should be OK. On some applications that is the only way to hook them up.

That mtr always worked the best with rope and pulley steering. If you're happy with what you have, use it.

interesting , but how would a motor work better with a different steering system ? what am i missing here? my concern would be to be able to turn the boat under worse case scenarios . thanks for the input .

It will work fine at anything above idle. Just reduces manuvering at low speed. Like docking. Rope and pully will move the motor until it hits the stops of the motor. Cable steering will only move as far as the ram is long.

Actually up on plane you'll never notice the engine barley turning. The slightest movement left or right and you'll turn! I thought my boat would handle like an airliner but once I'm going its great. Plus docking isn't that bad. If you've planned it right and work with the wind you'll be fine. Never regret getting my cable. Just, like you wish I had more nimbleness so to speak. Other than that I love it!

I got the steering done yesterday and it came out real good . i had to flip the bracket but had little room to make it work . so i took off the handles of the mounting clamps , used 3/4" threaded rod couplers to build it out 2" , and 3/4x1" bolts . i got the full swing to the left but about 85% to the right . what ever it takes , right ?

ran into a snag ,.....can't lift the motor up more than 3 " ,......it looks like 3" couplers will do the trick w/o losing the swing .
