I have a 2005 Minn Kota 24 volt All Terrain foot operated trolling motor that will not start up when I step on the foot pedal about 1 in 30 times. I can raise the motor out of the water, put it back down, and about 1 in 10 times it will start working. If it doesn't I can raise and lower it again and it will normally start working. I figured I had a short somewhere- this has been happening for several months and I finally decided to investigate.
Good voltage was found all the way to the motor. I finally determined that even though the motor had voltage, the prop would not turn when I step on the "go" button if the prop happened to stop at a certain point in its rotation. I can move the prop a half inch forward or backward, and hit the "go" button on the foot pedal, and it will go. I can manually put the prop in this place and it will not start when I step on the button.
I figured I needed a brush kit, ordered one, and went to replace the brushes. I found hardly any wear on the existing brushes, no water damage, on the armeture there was some slight raised places of the plastic - like green covering on the motor, there were a couple of discolored places on the part of the armeture that the brushes contact. I sanded of the rough spots, shined everything up, and re-installed, Same problem still occuring at the same spot in the prop rotation.
I disassembled and replaced the brushes and put back together. Same problem still occuring. The bearings turn smoothly, no loose or nicked wires, no wobble in the prop while it is turning, etc.
Now , do I need a new armeture, or does anyone have any ideas on what might be my problem ? When the motor is running, it is flawless.
Thanks for any help.
