My Dad purchased a Mercury Model 110, 9.8 HP, serial number 2704273, outboard at an auction with a cracked lower unit housing. He also just found a lower unit he thinks will work in the classifieds and went and bought it. The only difference he can see is in the shift rod. The original had a shift rod that was the same length as the drive shaft, and the replacement has a shift rod that only sticks up out of the lower unit about 6 inches or so. We are guessing his motor is a long shaft (20 inch drive shaft) and the replacement is from a short shaft motor (just a guess)? The question is, how much of the original "guts" of the lower unit are going to need to be swapped out with the replacement? Is it possible to just change the shift rod?
