Does anyone know what year this Seahorse 5 hp 2 cyclinder is? I also would like to know where I could find a repair manual for it. It appears to be missing a piece on the carburetor(no filter) but seems to run okay. Where is the water supposed to come out that cools the engine, I don't see and hole up top, is it supposed to come out where the exhaustt comes out?

It's a 1966 5hp. 50:1 ratio.

Thanks. I just got this thing started but only ran for a short time. It does not have a hole that shoot water out that I can find so how do you tell if the engine is being cooled by the water? Should water be coming out of the exhaust ports? or where?

Everybody wants to see a water hole. It doesn't have one. Water sprays out the small exhaust relief holes in the midsection to let you know it is working. Before you ask, there is no thermostat, although they did offer one as an accessory kit. The 5hp is a de-tuned 6hp with a non-shift lower unit. It was built to compete with the cheapo Sears/Eskas. Wasn't very successful because if people bought a Johnson, they expected a "real" Johnson. Johnson quit making the 5hp, but Sears continued on their merry way to the bank with their Eskas. There is no air filter on the carburetor. (Or anything else).

I've never seen an air filter on any of my engines. Did they start using them in later years?

Oh, and to be sure it's cooling, when running you should be able to touch the heads around the plugs for a few seconds and not get burned. Or splash a bit of water on the head and it should not sizzle off...

thanks for the expert info, as you can tell I don't know much about this engine. I will try running it again next week to see if it is getting to hot. I had to much water in the test barrel to see if water was coming out the exhaust holes plus use your other suggestion too. I assumed there was a filter or some type of cover over the carb since there is an empty bolt hole on the right side as I face the air inlet.

well, oddly enough there wasn't any airfilters used on outboards that I can recall. They had air silencers on the older ones, but your motor wouldn't have one. I guess they figured that the air isn't very dirty around the waterways.:D:D

I started it up yesterday and it is blowing some water out the exhaust ports and does not seem to be getting overheated. Thanks for all the information, you guys are great!

If you ever do decide to take a look at the water pump, be aware that when you remove the lower unit, the seal assembly at the top end of the drive shaft will come down with it. It is EXTREMELY important that the seal assembly be in 100% good condition and assembled correctly. Failure will result in destruction of the powerhead due to water ingestion. It will take awhile, but it will.
