Moisture in powerpack

Hello,<br /><br />I have a 1999 30hp Johnson.<br />I had several accidents with it.<br />It happened two times that the engine died on sea for unknown reason.<br />Now I have found the reason for it.<br />The wires coming out of powerpack's back side had loosened in the casting compound, so moisture could get into the cdi-circuitry.<br />I decided to open the case, a hard job because of the rubbery casting mass in it(polyurethane).<br />I finally cleaned the cdi board an resoldered all points on it.<br />I draw a schematics of the cdi-circuitry, a quite simple capacitor discharching thyristor design with a two stage over speed latch and a very simple killing facility.<br />Before casting it again I did a test and the engine ran very well.<br />I hope the wires will be sealed now quite well for a long time so moisture has no chance to produce leak currents in the circuitry again.<br /><br />Nordy from Germany

I'm gonna keep this post Nordy. Occasionally we're asked if those can be opened up and repaired so the answer is "yes".<br />Schematic has repaired them before but, like you, he said they were real difficult to get into.<br />Good job and keep us informed.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Is there an easy way to get the poly out? I've tried digging it out and it's real tough. Tried a little heat. Not much good. Wonder how places like Rapair remove it? Hello OBJ,<br /><br />you must remove the polyurethane mechanically bit by bit and very carefully, not to damage the components on the board.<br />There's no solvent for it (rhenatech.com).<br />If you like me also want to take the board out of the case it is necassary to make a whole in the front side of the case to dig the poly on the board's opposite side (the solder side) out too.<br />Believe me, it's a very hard job, but it works.<br /><br />Nordy

I bet places like rapair use stuff like this.<br />You'll notice most of these arn't really solvents.
