Re: More great news for US

Few problems with the biggest company making the biggest profit or 2nd biggest profit ever. other very large companys dependant on oil in very price competitve markets lose profitability fast such as UPS. airlines raise prices and/or go bankrupt or bankrupt ones become liquidated. costs of transportation increases making the cost of goods and services start to go up faster than they have been, while incomes remain the same so the same amount of money buys less, buying less means selling less which means employing less. ever vigilant government decides to push cutting estate taxes instead of excise taxes on petro. generations of those rich off investments in oil companies enjoy gold lined coffins while everyone else doubles up in hefty bags.

I'm not defending the oil companies but as far as I know there is no other company that has as much risk in making their profits. As Ken said 7 years ago they were hurting. The oil companies may sink multimillions into discovering oil fields, leasing land to drill, settling mineral rights, so on and so on and then drill several wells and come up with nothing. I'm not wild about paying $3.00 / gal of gas but I will stick by assertion of a few months ago that 3 dollar gas is pretty much in line when you look at how everything else has gone up in price. What about the cost of a college education now, would the faculty take pay cuts because the cost is to high? Doubtful.... I think I'll go buy some Exxon/Mobil stock now!

The world economy? I'm a little more concerned about the US economy.

I think the latex one is commenting on how the US fits into the global economy. Sort of like how certain people of influence effect the total picture.

yep no one bothers the banking industry and they are killing the middle class faster than anything with to much easy credit.
I read a report to congress last summer that stated in the summer of 07 the military defense cost of the oil shipped through the straits of Hormuz will cost more than the oil is actually worth, now it looks like that date may be this year.
but in the end its all about profit, no matter that like water systems or electrical systems there is a built in monopoly.
and gasoline in the states is still cheaper than most bottled water even though in the states most all county/city water supplies are totaly safe to drink. not like some here in VE :) . at least beer is pasturized and only 30 cents a bottle or so.
but ya realy cant fault the poor oil companies. they just do what all corperations do.

Thankfully we are all on the same sheet of music. I can't wait for the new drilling in ANWAR and off our coasts so we can have a greater ready supply, decreased supply lines, reduced dependance on unstable nations, and of course some more of those new refineries to help lower the cost. Those restrictive environmental regulations that make it all but impossible to develop new refineries will be whisked away along with the legal barriers to drilling and exploration domestically.

I can expect all of you to contact your elected officials to get this going right away.

And of course the best thing to do is tax those darn companies into the stone age. That will show em.... It will never affect the price at the pump.

I thought that the oil companies were running about 8% profit. If not I am sure everyone here will be moving their investments to the lucrative oil industry stocks to offset their out of pocket costs at the pump.

With the cost of crude being what it is I would think that it should be getting feasible to extract oil from shale which we have lots and lots of. Oh, I forgot, probably right under the spotted owl nesting area and the half sighted salamanders breeding area. Well, looks like we'll have to buy foreign oil still.:'(

while profit is good and so far the anwar thing cant supply enough to do nything but make knee-jerkers happy, my beef is this is not the first time in history oil companies have had a run of extended super profit margins.
like water and electrical and natural gas suppliers the profit needs to be regulated a bit to insure adequate facilities are maintained.,
can ya imagine if con edison failed to maintain the electrical grid yet still made a handsome profit?I am seeing it both in venezuela and the US. the profits are lining more and more pockets and there is less and less reinvestment in what generated the profits. with a wal-mart or JC Penny who cares.
the land most the infastructure for energy and water mains is mostly public domain and as such the company holds a monopoly and should be held accountable.
