Re: More Horse Power

The inline 6,most came with a 2 barrel. Some came with a 4 barrel they were rated at 185hp.The factory made the plate to change them over.It came with a real nice custom air cleaner.I know it was available in 1970s.
If your running 4100rpm step down in pitch. It will save gas and give better performance.Jerry

Pretty Cool ;) From the factory, but I thought it was 180hp, whatever, it's all good! :)

hummmmmm, so what are ya guys talking about?

4bbls. on a 250cid. L6..... which year was that?

185hp or 180hp 250cid L6, whichever, what year was that?

just wondering?

Re: More Horse Power

Hi all. I promised to let you know how it went.

I got an easy additional 300 RPM by going to the 4 Barrel. Out of the whole she does not jump as much but she does not bog down in turns like she used to. VERY happy with this upgrade.

Funny part is I blew the manifold exhaust bellow appart lol. Any suggestions on switching to a thru-hull exhaust? The exhaust seems to be melting my 1 yr old bellow.

thanks!

Re: More Horse Power

Well, has anyone thought of trying smart tabs? They should give just a little more top end and lots more bottom end, so to speak. It's the most cost effective performance improvement I can think of. :D

Trim tabs will actually hurt top end....

Unless you have power trim and can make your boat porpouse you'll probably lose a little top speed.

When installed and tuned properly Smart Tabs will increase top end speed. The manufacture guarantees this or they will refund the purchase price.

From the nauticus (makers of smart tabs) website

Nauticus, Inc. warrants that any appropriately sized and applicable SMART TABS set will improve the overall performance of a planing hull power boat, as claimed by the company, to the satisfaction of the original purchaser.

http://www.nauticusinc.com/nauticus_warranty.html

I didn't see anything about a top speed improvement gaurentee.

It has nothing to do with how they are installed.

Like I said... with power trim yes... but without it... NO. I don't see how the tabs are doing anything to increase speed. For more speed you want as little of the boat in the water as possible.... trim tabs can only put more of the boat in the water. They don't help with bow lift and are unnecessary drag at high speed UNLESS your have enough trim travel (from power trim) to make your boat porpous. In that case you will pick up a little top speed because the tabs will control the porpousing.

Re: More Horse Power

One of the "claims of the company" is the increase in top end. I was told by them specifically that my non-trim boat should gain a MPH or two. The owner of the company has stated that on here many times also. I expect that if I search on here long enough I can find his explanation, but I trust what he told me on the phone. ;)

You're right.

There is nothing about increase in top speed because NO tabs can increase speed. If they touch the water they increase parasitic drag. (period)

I have Bennett SportTabs on my 87 211 Liberator. They work great for what they're intended to do.......but when I want to go fast I run them all the way up so they DO NOT touch the water.

Any position lower where they touch the water causes drag and slows the boat down.

I can electrically run them up far enough so they don't.

I don't think "Smart" Tabs are all that smart. They're just manually adjusted tabs that have springs on them. They're ALWAYS pushing down on the water. Causing drag. It's very hard to improve top speed when you're increasing drag.

Now for slow speed operations, you can adjust them for the bow-rise/hole-shot, etc that you want or the speed you want to pull skiers/wakeboarders etc.....but if you want them to do something else you need to adjust them for different speeds.

For top speed you don't want them touching the water.

That is NOT how they work, there is more to it that that. I didn't design them, have never seen the plans and I'm not an expert on exactly how they work, so I won't go into a detailed explanation. I'd just be wrong anyway. However, that is NOT how the inventor describes there operation. Also, EVERY post I've seen on their performance ends up with either the same top speed or an INCREASE, even on boats without active trim. You call them liars if you want, but since the manufacture guarantees it (to me personally on the phone) I have a tendency to believe it. :)

Re: More Horse Power

If you're going fast they'll slow you down period. They will increase speed on a boat that you aren't flying out of the water with. It will cut through the chop better and not bounce around. Don't get me wrong, I love mine. A lot. I run them for handling purposes. My boat handles great with them. so when I'm out with a bunch of people on the boat I have them on. Planes faster, turns better, safer to play on. when out testing high speed and wanting the bow out of the water they come off. If not the bow will never come up to air out the hull.

Re: More Horse Power

ya.. so anyways lol I checked to make sure I have lots of water flow - even took out the thermostat to really soak it. Going to hot tank the exhaust elbow - the manifold is new. So I don't think it's a water shortage - that was my first thought as well. Where the water and exhaust mix, you can see exactly where the water deflected the hot gas right onto the bellow and made the hole.

For the thru-hull exhaust, I'm fabricating an S bend of metal pipe and then to a bellow and then to a flange in the transom. I'm also putting in a 3" riser on the exhaust elbow for clearance and in case my flapper is not 100%.

I'll let you know how it goes - but I'm hoping for 50 rpm extra.
