I cannot help you a great lot, but brass was used before worldwar 2. A rough guess would put it somewhere before 1940.
If you could post a picture, you would probably have an exact answer in five minutes flat.

You can send them to me and I will be happy to post them on here for you. In the message, put "More info Needed", so I remember where to post them :)

rickdb1@earthlink.net

Re: More Info Needed-Can You Identify This Motor

If we go with the "B" we can date it after 1915. It does not say "The Original Evinrude" so that puts it before 1922, the year after Ole introduced the Elto.
That would put 1918 right there in the middle.
It is possible that there are "A" and "B"parts on one and the same engine because simular parts were cannibalised from another engine to keep this one running. This was very common in the lean 1930's.
On the earlier ones there was a tin plate with square lettering. On this one we see that the name is in cursive and part of the cast.
Where are steelspike and chinewalker when you need them? Scott has probably seen it in the old outboard museum. It is in his neck of the woods.
Am I making sense so far,or am I just far out there?

Re: More Info Needed-Can You Identify This Motor

The only thing that bothers me is that I don't see the engraved name plate on any of the comparable motors. I know that it is on the 1920 because I have the Ad. 1920 Evinrude
[I wish Rick would tell me how to post a photo on this site. :) ]

ezeke

MSN is tough to get pictures to link from. I use earthlink as my webpage and it's easy. So is geocities . Might want to try and get an account their and then you can link your pics from their site. I can pull up the small preview version of your pictures on MSN, but when I enlarge them, it won't let me link it. For example:

6.jpg

or

f.jpg

But that's as big as I can get them from MSN. I just right click on the little preview picture on your site and pick properties and copy the address(URL) Then when I reply on this site, I paste it in the image box. Some sites you can link easy, some you can't. This site you can! Try it on any picture above! Just preview your post, but don't actually post it. Don't want to see the same picture twice, do we?? :)

Re: More Info Needed-Can You Identify This Motor

Okay, what we have here is a pre WWI Evinrude Rowboat motor, I am guessing c.1912 or 1913. It does not have the reverse feature that the 1918 models show (twist the tiller handle and the lower unit walks around backwards). It also has the smaller filler cap in the gas tank, typical of 1909-1912 models. It DOES have a skeg, which 1909 and early 1910 models did not have. It DOES have the embossed Exhaust casting which the very earliest motors did not have. It is battery ignition, making use of a buzz coil and HotShot battery. It is missing the exhaust can. The original ID plate would have been soldered to the tin gas tank in the rear/top. The very earliest motors didn't have a model number stamped in the plate, just a serial number (I have #790).
Hope that helps...
- Scott

Hello Scott.
The oldest known Evinrude is the 780.Is it reasonable to think that you are the proud owner of the second oldest known Evinrude?

Re: More Info Needed-Can You Identify This Motor

Hi Rolmops,
Actually, that was a typo on my part. Ours IS #780. It's on loan to the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority/Antique Boat Museum in their joint display at Boldt Castle.
- Scott
