I have a 1991 Capri cuddy 120 force l drive. Lots of bad reviews on the setup. Mine has run beautifully. I haul a lot of people and is really slow getting out the hole. Even top end is little less than desired. Does anyone know if these motors and drives can be upgraded with this model boat?

With the L-drive setup, there's not a lot that you can do. At least not anything that's going to make much difference as far as horsepower. The only thing you can do is to make sure your propeller is matched for what you want to do. What is your RPM at WOT?

That's another issue I am trying to work on. When I bought the boat a few weeks ago tachometer and speedo weren't working. that's my next project. I am replacing the prop this weekend. The one I have is pretty beat up. I did figure out that not loading it with fuel helps. Didn't realize how responsive small boats are to little weight changes. Any ideas on the tach and speedo? Thanks.

You said it in the first post.
I haul a lot of people.
Most boats when designed are set for 2 people and a light load.
You could bore it out and re-jet and re-prop.
Maybe adapt a 150 head?
The tach you need is a 20 pole.
Sometimes spraying with WD-40 helps(why not it's already broken)
Most speedos don't go bad. Check the hose from the pitot tube and the pitot tube itself.
Lots of times the tip of the pickup is broken off.

The quickest way for more power is getting a bigger motor or different boat.
Unfortunately the L drive was made only a couple of years. Then they stopped making replacement parts.

Because of the exhaust set-up you can not install a 150 block. Unfortunately there is little you can do with this combo to increase power. You COULD port the engine but then the increased power comes at a higher RPM--exactly wrong for your heavy load conditions. Besides, even if you gained say, 25 horsepower it would only mean a couple of MPH more.

So, if you absolutely must have more power you will need to buy a different boat. Probably not what you want to hear but the best advice I can give.

Thanks for the input. I will deal with the slower speed. I have a large family and we all love being in the boat. Pretty good trade off if you ask me. I will check the tube for the speedo and WD the tach. Does anyone know if you can add a longer ladder to the swim deck. I'm no small guy and my family love to watch me try to get out of the water. Finally figured it out but what a pain. Thanks again!!!

Yes you can get the longer ladder to add to the swim platform.
E-bay maybe Craigslist depending on where you live??

you would be good to drop down in prop pitch - it will be easier on your engine. i run a low pitch all the time b/c I have 5-7 people in my boat and we slalom. So if you have a 19p drop down to 17p.
