Re: More speed

I've been playing this "speed game" for 3-4 years now and its all about how much $$$ you have to spend. I went from a 350 to a 383 and now I'm at a 408sbc 425hp that gets me 70-73mph gps. What got me wanting more speed was being on a 21' checkmate going 70 and that was the biggest rush, after I had to upgrade. There are little things you can do getting 1-3 mph that cost pretty cheap. Getting a prop labbed added 3mph to my top end and 400rpm($300-600), weight distribution in a boat. I replaced my sunpad/bench seat from 3/4 inch wood to starboard(way lighter) which saved 60lbs. How many batteries do you have? If two, get this one for starting purposes http://www.performancedistributors.com/batteries.htm (saved me 45lbs). But in all... if you really want to go fast.... just buy a stock faster boat. Its a buyers market right now. Good luck!

Re: More speed

The easiest way to increase speed is to trade your boat for a motorcycle. You can get up over 100mph with those and they have brakes.

Re: More speed

just about any 18ft bass boat with any 150hp outboard will run 60mph. you may be barkin up the wrong tree for top speed.

Re: More speed

When comparing "my" V-8 to "your" V-6; you gotta remember they have different gear ratios. The V-8 spins the prop faster than the V-6. The 5.0 with a 21 can run a little faster than the 4.3 with a 23 because of the gear ratios.

Getting a 4.3 to produce 300 hp is a no brainer. It just costs money. :)

It takes more than 150HP on an 18'er to get to 60mph. The 17.5' bass rig we had with a 115 Merc would barely run over 40mph. If you said a 200HP on the back, then yeah. A stingray runabout weighs a lot more, has larger running surface, and creates more drag from its air-profile than just about any bass boat out there. Hence the reason running 65+ is going to take a big-block and a different outdrive. Sure, there are 20' Nitros, Champions, Bullets, etc running close to 80mph with a 250/300HP Merc on the back, but that's a completely different animal, and isn't really safe to run but in the best of conditions.

Yeah I doubt you'd do much better'n that without major mods. My brother has a 19 footer w/4.3 that'll run 53-54 with a light load. That's with a 23 pitch 3 blade SS prop. A buddy has a 20 footer w/5.7 that isn't all that much faster, 57-58 I believe.
