Hi folks new here and i need help. I have a 87 60hp Mercury outboard. had fuel issues (no fuel, floats were sticking) the past month so i rebuilt the 2 carbs and all was good for about an hour!! now The motor bogs down when i hit the throttle. we messed with the air jets and it worked.... drove about 3 miles and then started again. Now can't get it to run UNLESS... we stick our hand over the air intake on the TOP carb... then it picks right up and runs like a top. As soon as i throttle back and then hit it forward again it bogs down untill we put our hand over the intake for a few seconds then off she gos. Any ideas i am about to pull my hair out with this motor! Thanks

1. If you keep pushing it running lean on some cylinders, you can come back and ask advice on a major overhaul. Don't do that.

2. The carb is plugged up AGAIN. You need to redo the rebuild, and then dig into the system and find out where the contamination is coming from. Could be dirty tank, decaying hoses, etc.

hope it helps

ok thanks. Is there a filter in the tanks? I think i am going to just replace all the fuel components. Also where the fuel clips on the motor was leaking and i was out on the water so i deleted the connector and just put an inline filter in to connect the 2 fuel lines. could this be a problem?

Hey jbrown8988

Check tank for crap.

Replace primer bulb/lines leading to engine if old or suspect.

Check were lines hook to engine should not have a air/fuel leak there.
Is is it a bayonet connector if so I just bypassed that and hook it right to fuel pump/carb. (Little tip from Jmartin)

Redo carb with new kit ( make sure you have the new plastic floats not foam).

Check fuel pump and/or rebuild that aswell.

Yes where the line hooks to the engine is a removable clip... that is where i put the inline filter when it started leaking. I have plastic floats in both carbs (just put them in) I have already replaced the primer ball and hose from oil injection container to motor. i will replace the others...

Hey jbrown8988

By bayonet connectors I mean this one...
http://www.google.com/products?hl=e...esult_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCcQrQQwAA

Or type in "Mercury bayonet connector" in google images.

I just removed my bayonet connector and went right to the fuel pump with the primer bulb line. I still have my old glass thumb sized inline filter between the fuel pump and first carb run.

That air/gas leak isn't good, gotta figure it out.

Lemme know,

Sounds like you put a little filter in there. Yes, that could be a problem for sure. That little engine uses as much fuel as a v8 pickemup doing 70. If it leaked air there when you primed, it sucked air when the engine was pulling fuel. That alone will make it starve for fuel.

Do yourself a favor and replace defective parts with the right part, rather than duct taping something in "for now." When that engine is set up right, meaning properly, it's very reliable and strong. Starve it and push it, and it will become a boat anchor.
