Motor cooling question

I have a 90HP Mercury outboard. Lately I've noticed the volume of water that cools the engine and flows out of the exit spout has greatly diminished. It's gone from a steady flow to a trickle especially at low revs. I have not noticed that the engine is overheating. Should I be very concerned? and assuming it may be some kind of blockage how do I correct it?

That 90 should **** like a race horse unlike the 200h.p motor.... check the **** hole to see if clogged..when was the pump replaced...those motors have a large sturdy pump that lasts much longer then the smaller 200hp. pumps...you don't give enough information about the year, last time the pump was changed, or the fact that your overheat alarm even works upon startup.....

Thanks for the reply. It's a 2006 motor and I've never had to replace the pump (until now maybe). There is no obvious blockage at the exit/ entrance holes but who knows what may lurk inside. As I said the motor does not appear to be overheating and there is a trickle of cooling water getting through but I don't want to do any damage. I think I'll take it back to my dealer next week.

Perhaps you hit a submerged object lately? You may have developed a leak around the seals in the water pump. When's the last time you changed the impeller? Every year or two is recommended. Good Luck
