Motor Guide speed problems

I have a Brute 750 50# thrust, probably around a '93 model since it's on a '93 boat. 24V, foot control. Speeds 1, 2 and 3 run at the same speed. Speed 4 shuts the motor off. Speed 5 runs at what looks to be normal speed on #5. Changed the rotary speed control switch, still have the same problem. Checked a wiring diagram and everything looks fine. What am I missing? HELP!

Re: Motor Guide speed problems

The speed control switch is just that -- its a switch. As such it only selects the circuit that controls motor speed and does not have anything to do with motor speed by itself. So the issue is with the speed control circuit, not the switch. Don't know if that motor uses speed coils (big wire wound resistors) but those can open thus causing loss of speed on certain settings. If #5 is the fastest speed and that's normal, then the speed control circuit is the issue. If the motor uses a solid state speed controller you should be able to check the output from that unit provided it is where you can get at it..

Re: Motor Guide speed problems

being a 93 model i would say it's got speed coils not a speed circuit board

Re: Motor Guide speed problems

Just pulled the motor apart and found a burned spot on the windings. I'm assuming those are the speed coils. Are those easily replaceable? Another question I have is how in the world do you set the brushes back in the proper place when you put the motor back together? I don't see a way to do that.

Re: Motor Guide speed problems

yea have to replace the hole part of the motor called a comentator it comes with new wires and brushes also have to run the wires up the pole and connect them in the head not hard to do as far as brushes there is usually a small hole yea stick a pin or some thing in it and it holes the brushes back then pull the pin and your all set if no small hole just pull then gently and slide the armatuer in place and release the brushes yea should beable to do all this your self if yea got alittle mechanical ability call marine specailty house in ga for the part they have been the cheapest so far i fouinf the number is 770-996-9014 he will ship it to yea just tell him make model and that your coils are burnt and need the comentator he's great with trolling motors for sure
