Re: Motor has run GREAT twice now..

Well done Dude! Its so satisfying when you trouble shoot your own engine and finally, all the hard work pays off!!!..:D

I'm glad its all come together nicely because I know how frustrating it is when you know somethings going wrong, but you just can't put your finger on it then, BLAM, you got it. Good stuff.

Just a quick Q tho, can you show a link to this "spark gap" tester please because I'm from England, and I don't think I have ever come across one yet, apart from them crappy neon things lol.
Cheers, and one again, well done fella...:D

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, it does feel pretty good after going through the motor a good bit thinking I had the problem licked. The bad part was realizing the person I bought it from most likely knew about the problem and decided not to tell me because it ran fine on muffs.. Only indication I got there was any problem at all was him telling me "Yeahhh, we took it to "some marina" last summer and had the fuel system gone through"... Well you can see from my first pictures what sort of condition the fuel system was.. Oh well! I'm happy now :)

This is the exact one I used. Picked a couple up locally.

Ground the clamp end to a good motor ground and connect your spark plug lead to the other. I must say, I over extended that clamp a bit and it fell apart. You could solder a wire to it to screw down to a ground or something as well.

I just measured and cut a little scrap of paper to 7/16" and used that to set the gap.. The main piece is threaded and moves in and out. That 7/16" gap looks awfully large until you see that spark firing across with a good ignition!

I don't have the link saved on this computer, but search for a post by Joe Reeve DIY Spark gap tester, using a board, a few nails, and some wire.

There are also a couple on YouTube, one used a distributor cap drilled out the center post and used a bolt to hold a washer in place, centered within all the terminals, large enough it left a 7/16 gap between the terminals and washer, on the outside the bolt held a sturdy ground wire with an alligator clip.

They all work fine.

Nice job, Buckeye! Always good to hear when a fellow iboater solves a pesky motor problem.

You need a DVA meter or DVA adaptor to test the high speed output of the stator.

I have one. Actually two. A homeade one and one from the internets.

But the motor runs great now. Problem solved. Bad coil pack #1 cyl. Unburnt gas on the plug was my first clue. Cheap spark testers were showing spark. 7/16 spark gap test showed ZERO spark.

Yes, I was really tempted to do the distributor cap deal. Looked pretty neat in action heh.
