opinions wanted. 1444, mv jon boat.9.8 4 strke tohatsu. my anti cav plate sits a full 3 inches below the bottom of the hull. i do not have enough transom to raise it.the clamps and bolts sit 2 inches below the top of my transom. i could maybe use a stick and raise it an inch. i just dont have the room to bolt the motor down. would raising it help my top end? would it be that much better?please chime in. and yes it is a short shaft motor. the transom measures 16 in.. i cannot plane with 2 guys.

Re: motor heght

Yes raising it will help a lot. However, with the info you have given, your motor is not a short shaft.

Re: motor heght

It does sound like you have a long shaft motor. 16 inch transom with the cav plate 3 inches below it -sounds like about 19 inches.

Anyhow, here's what I did to raise my motor 5 inches. It's 3 pieces of 3/8 aluminum welded together by a local welding shop. Then a piece of 1-1/8 (I think) plywood cut to fit. $100 for materials and labor.

Re: motor heght

ok i went and measured again. 1.25 inches is closer to it. probably not worth messing with. when i repower with my 20 hp i will consider a jack plate. thanks everyone.im just a goon trying to tweak something for the sake of tweaking

Re: motor heght

You need to measure from the underside of the clamp to the AV plate, HD. It is physically impossible to mount a 15" shaft motor on a 16" transom and have a 3" surplus.

I have run into several people who should know better who swear that 20" is a short shaft and 25" a long shaft. My guess is that is what your real problem is.

I would ask for a refund or replacement with a 15" shaft outboard. You should get what you paid for without having to jerry rig your boat.

Pretty sure this picture(attachment) came from this site.
You can buy or build a jack plate or even build (weld)aluminum to build up your transom.

Re: motor heght

I think your shaft is a short shaft as you say. Setup right your 9.8 should plane easily with 2 aboard unless it is heavily modified with emphisis on heavy.Tell us your prop size,Does it plane with one aboard? You may need to move a lot of weight forward to test it.Trim in(prop closer to the boat)
Also would help to know your max rpm and speed.
