motor installation / connection

I just mounted a new 90 HP Mercury on a '94 VIP Fish 'n Ski, which had a 90 HP Force on it and Quicksilver (?) controls. Everything connects well except the shift and throttle controls - the Force had a different configuration to secure the cables to the engine than the Mercury does. Is there an adapter kit for something like this? If not, I'm faced with buying new controls or rigging what I have. I'm not sure the existing controls have the oil injection alarm built in. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Biplane

The control is compatable (I'm assuming the Force 90 was circa 1994) with the new motor-there should be no linkage problems, the low oil sender is in the oil tank--the warning "horn" is either in the control box--if it's a self contained Commander 2000, or new 4000. If you have panel or binnacle shifter-the horn is on the harness under the console.

Thanks, outboard tech. I'm glad it will fit (provided I can figure it out). The end of the control cables will attach to the shift lever and the throttle linkage, respectively, but I'm having trouble with the cable securing device which is several inches from the end. That device (a swiveling piece of black plastic) was compatible with a gizmo on the Force that held the cable in place; I don't see how to connect that on the Mercury. What am I missing?

Biplane

I'm trying to understand where you're hung up....the cable trunnions (the threaded cylindrical disc on the cable shaft) fit into a plastic "cup" --one over the other, that then fits into a bracket on the forward port side of the motor. All this assumes your Mercury is a 2- stroke. If 4-stroke, the cables will still attatch, but they have, I believe , seperate trunnion holders and I don't remember which side of the cowling they enter through. You should have an installation guide with the new motor showing all this along with the cable adjustment procedure, which is pretty critical on this particular gearcase.

I think what you have is the Universal type of cable on an older Force control. They changed the wiring harness over to Merc style fairly early after they bought Force. The cables took a few more years. You can get adapter kits for the cables. They're available to convert the universal type cable to any of the manufacturers. You can also get certain Mercury cables that were of Universal design in the box end and Mercury style at the motor end. The adapter kit would be the cheapest and easiest option.

If the Force control had a horn in it, it will work with the Merc.

Thank you! I've made good progress. I guess I had a mental block on that securing device. On the Force it was secured on pegs on the engine; on the Mercury those devices fit into cupped areas. Anyway I've got it now.
Thanks!!
