Just bought this 28 ft. bayliner, port side motor just quit. Distributor gear broke inside the motor had someone pull the motor get the crap out of the oil pan. New distributor and coil, fluids carb rebuilt new altenator zinks painted. Got it back in the water took it out about 1 hour in motor just died, put it in neutral and it started right back up. Okay, so now I took it out last weekend cruising on a plain at about 3000 rpm and it almost felt as if I hit somthing, (I was in 50 feet of water)motor just died. I told the mechanic he said pull plugs and look for water while crankin it. Pulled plugs no sign of water in or on plugs, only thing is it would not even try to turn over. I checked the stsrter wires, all looked good and tight. Why would it just stop unless it broke the dist. gear again. Is there any other reason it would just stop.

Will the engine turn over by hand?
Was the cam gear checked when the other dist. gear broke? They usually get damaged too, and if not replaced will break another distributor gear.

Re: Motor Just Stoped

I asked when they pulled the dist. if the cam was good and they said yes. At the time I was willing to buy a new cam so it would all be done at once. The other thing iI noticed was the inline fuse from the key ignition at the lower helm was blown put a new fuse in and it was blown. but I was still able to start the motor from the upper helm. My question is if the upper helm key ignition fuse blows would it just stop the motor? I haven't looked for a fuse up top yet. But God I hope it is somthing like that insted of major engine problem.

If a fuse blows, it's due to a short or something running that takes more amperage than the fuse is rated for. So could it kill the engine, sure, just depends on what went and why.
