Is it possible the piece that broke was the lock to keep the motor down when in reverse? It's made for just a situation, just got to remember to unlock in forward or you can get into real trouble going forward.

The reverse lockdown does not work correctly on my 70hp evinrude either. When I need to use reverse, I just wrap a tie down strap around the back of the motor and hook it to the transom on each side of the motor. This keeps the motor from rising out of the water when in reverse. It works pretty well, but be sure and take the strap off when going forward or the motor will not kick up if you hit a log or something.

Many people think that if you have the engine in lock, you will damage the engine if you hit something. That is a friction lock, it will release with very little impact. If you were to grasp the gearcase, and give a sharp yank, it will snap loose.
