Motor only starts with Starting Fluid.

I have a 1968 55hp. johnsons outboard motor that
was not used for over 2yrs. I recently started the
motor. It runs very rough. The problem is that the
motor would not start w/o the use of starting fluid.I was told that the proper gas/oil(tcw3)
mixtuure is 1pint to every 6gallons of gas.
Can someone assist me w/this problem, fore,i am
new to outboards. Thank you in advance.....
Algamble@aol.com

You might check the choke. My 40 horse merc did the same thing, turned out the choke fell completely off.

I'd lose the starting fluid. It's real bad juju for 2 cycle engines. It washes all the lube out of the bearings and off the cylinder walls. As was mentioned before, be sure the choke butterfly is closing when you choke it. If it's working, choke it 'till it starts or floods. I'll bet it starts.

c/6

Hooty

Not to be a killjoy, but if the motor has been down for 2 years and now its running rough and needs a squirt to start, it almost certainly needs a carb rebuild do to gum and varnish that has dried in the orifices. Use a squirt bottle of premix gas/oil instead of starting fluid.

To:Wilsontdy,Dude,Hooty,and Jimb:
I would like to thank each one of you for your response, however, here comes the bad news,(ouch!!!),I put the boat in the water yesterday,(6/8/03),and it was raining on that day. As they say, when it rains,it pours. I started up the motor, and at this time,it was actually pouring down rain, and guess what? The motor actually cracked!!!! No exaggeration,it cracked!!! For one's
first boat. If anyone out there have a used 50 to 65hp. motor (reliable)for sale,it would be greatly appreciated. Either contact me through iboats forum,or at Algamble258@aol.com. Hey Dude:
if you are still in contact with the Gamble brothers, please have them contact me!!! Thanks to all who responded, and may God Bless!!!!!
