how does someone prove ownership of their outboard. i know there is a serial # and model #, if someone steals my motor how do i prove its mine, is their some kind of paper from the outboard dealer saying so and so bought this motor. would writing the numbers down be enough ? im curious about this although nobody has taken my motor yet, knock on wood.

You should require the seller to put the sn on the bill of sale. A picture wouldn't hurt though any motor can be painted. You could also scribe the sn somewhere where only you know where it is.

In South Carolina, we have two titles for our outfit, a seperate one for the Boat, and another one for the motor (if over 5hp). They are titled just the same as an automobile. We then have a sticker (tag) for the boat, and a seoerate sticker (tag) that is applied to the right hand side of the motor cover. As well as the titles, you have a registration card which must be on the boat at all times, same routine as an automobile.

these are all great replys, thanks. the scribing my dl # somewhere on the engine is a great idea, i dont know why it didnt cross my mind before ive seen it done. also im in nc, and we dont have an engine sticker, but if we did i would have no problem putting it on my engine.
