I'm thinking of buying a '95 evinrude 90hp 2stroke outboard motor. It's used, but being sold by a marina who says they'll tune it up and warranty for 90 days. They are asking $1k. Does anyone have any experience with these motors, or know if they are generally reliable? Any info is appreciated. This is my first post also, so let's know if I need to provide more info or anything.

Re: Motor Purchase

$1000 is a good price for that motor...especially with a warranty. I m going t assume that a compression numbers are good. If it were me, I would have a new impeller installed before the motor is mounted. At least then you will know its been done. These old V4s were very strong in their day.

Re: Motor Purchase

sounds like a fair deal.they are at least confident enough about the motor to give you a 90 day warranty.of course get that in writing on the bill of sale.by 1995 the 90 v4 evinrudes had been around for 10 plus years of production and id hazard a quess that they sold thousands of the buggers.i had a 1982 rude and it was stone cold reliable and gave me many years of faithful service and I hope the next owner had the same luck.if you were to buy private you may get it cheaper depending on your region but you also get the world infamous tail light warranty to go with it.you can always offer a bit less and see if they bite also.

If that is a 60* V4 motor, it should be a good one. I also think the price is reasonable. The older 90* Crossflow V4 motors were good as well, but not as advanced.

That would be a good price here. Check the compression and then go for it. The tune up should include the new impeller, but check to make sure.

Ten four, gang.
Sounds like all systems go. Thanks for the info; and to sweeten the deal we agreed on them installing the new motor in trade for my 40hp with a bad lower unit. ...~$300 value...

Guess I'll be in the river catchin hogs sooner than I thought!
Thx again...
