I am looking at buying a 89 Stratos fish-ski. It has a 1989 Yamaha 150 outboard motor on it. Just curious did Yamaha build a good motor back then? The boat is absolutely awesome looking for the year, and the hour meter reads around 240 hours. Is that alot for an 89 model? Just curious. Thanks

A well maintained 2 cycle engine will last for thousands of hours of hard use. The "typical" recreation boater will put on around 50 hours per year - you do the math. The key is regular routine maintenance with a good set-up and spinning at the max factory recommended RPMs.

It's a Yamaha, they have been making motors forever, i would have no problem buying any Yamaha.
That said you can turn a Rolls Royce into a peice of crap if you don't maintain it.
At the least do a compression check(100+ all within 10%) and run the boat on the water.
If it was taken care of it is a good motor.

240 hours is nothing...

On a good season I can do about 100 without even trying.
